What is Art Deco?

Art Deco peaked in popularity from 1925 to 1940. This architectural style features hard edges with applied decorations, geometric design, and low relief architecture. Rectangular shapes are broken up with curved designs and ornaments are used to break up rectangular shapes in these specialty homes.

Common features in Art Deco design include:

  • Hard edges
  • Chevron
  • Ziggurats
  • Floral and sunrise designs
  • Swirls and curves
  • Steps and staircases
  • Mirrors
  • Parapets, spires, or towers

Native American and Egyptian artwork inspired the stylized designs common to art deco buildings. Items found in King Tut’s tomb may also have inspired early Art Deco designs.

Examples of Art Deco Architecture

Architects don’t often use the Art Deco style for individual homes – rather, you’ll see more art deco office buildings or art deco apartment buildings.

The Chrysler Building in New York City is a good example of art deco architecture. You can see other examples in movies, like Shall We Dance or The Great Gatsby.

In Denver, the Harry Huffman Mansion, also known as the Shangri-La House, is a great example of art deco. Raymond Harry Ervin designed this art deco home in 1938, inspired by the mansion in the movie Lost Horizon.

To see art deco apartment buildings, visit Poet’s Row in Denver. The Mark Twain, Robert Browning, Washington Irving, and Emerson Apartments are all examples of apartment buildings featuring art deco style. Visit the Bonnie Brae, Hilltop, and Park Hill neighborhoods to find other examples of Art Deco homes in Denver.
