As temperatures drop in Colorado, use tricks in your home to stay warm and cozy without turning up the thermostat!
When the temperatures drop, snowflakes start flying, and daylight hours shorten, more of us spend indoor time in front of a blazing fire and curled up on the couch with a good book, movie, or football game on tv. It’s easy to warm up your space without turning up the furnace. Try these tricks to make your home warm and cozy this winter.
Light a Candle
Take advantage of interconnected senses by playing to your sense of smell! Certain scents are associated with warmth. The smell of pine, baking cookies, or fresh bread can help create a warm atmosphere. Vanilla and cinnamon scented candles can remind you of baking cookies without needing to keep a batch in the oven.
Spread Rugs and Blankets
When it is cold outside, add layers in your home! Placing additional rugs on top of your floor (even carpet) can add insulation and warmth to your rooms. Make sure you have blankets available next to your living room furniture. Fabrics like wool, cashmere, and cable knit provide extra coziness.
Warm Colors and Texture
Your home decor can also create warmth. Add accessories, like pillows, blankets, or artwork, in warm colors. Red, yellow, and gold throw pillows can brighten a room without much expense. Instead of turning up the temperature, curl up with a textured blanket!
Change your Light Bulbs
What color are your light bulbs? LED light bulbs come in multiple shades of white. Swapping cool white LED bulbs, which tend to have a blue tint, with warm white (yellow tint) ones can make your rooms feel more welcoming. LED bulbs are also more efficient than traditional incandescent. Replace any incandescent bulbs with warm LED light bulbs to brighten your space and lower your energy bill.
Curl up and Relax
Make sure the areas where you spend the most time are warm and cozy for the winter. Pay special attention to your living room, fireplace, or bedroom. Channel your favorite library to create a space to curl up with a good book. Create a cozy reading nook or corner with a comfy chair, warm throw blanket, and side table.
Try a Warm Drink
Grab your favorite mug and mix up your favorite warm beverage! Make sure you have plenty of hot cider, hot chocolate, and hot toddies on hand for cold Colorado winter nights ahead.
